The best Torrijas in Madrid

Easter is coming, and with it will come the famous Torrijas, a dessert that has traditionally been made with a slice of bread soaked in milk or wine, coated in egg and then fried in oil, although today each pastry shop in Madrid has its variants and put their personal touch on it, the recipe is has maintained over the years.

This place, located on Calle Mayor 10, maintains its original recipe since it began in 1855, making Torrijas with milk or wine with a touch of citrus and cinnamon. When you try them, they will literally melt in your mouth, as they are one of the thinnest and lightest Torrijas that you can taste.

 

Horno de San Onofre

One of the favorite and best-known pastry shops in Madrid, making all kinds of traditional sweets, including Milk or Wine Toriijas, but also caramel or the Prince’s that has a chocolate filling. This place, located at number 73 on Calle Mayor, assures that the flavor and success of its torrijas is due to the fact that the bread is enriched with butter and sugar.

 

 

Mifer

This pastry shop has recently won the award for the Best Traditional Torrija in Madrid 2022, thanks to the work of its master pastry chef. With 53 years offering cakes, chocolates and tarts, this pastry shop has managed to maintain the unique and original recipe of its torrijas, but giving it a touch of distinction with the sourdough brioche, along with a honey and rum syrup on top.

La Mallorquina

We cannot go further in this list without mentioning the well-known Mallorquina, located in the middle of Puerta del Sol, where you will always see long queues of people wanting to try some of their incredible desserts. In this one you can find extra large Torrijas (surely you will want to share them), made with bread dipped in milk and sugar, they are flavored with cinnamon and syrup, they have a homey touch that reminds you of when you prepare them at home.

 

 

Manacor

Chosen in 2020 as the best Torrija in Madrid, to make them this pastry shop uses brioche-type bread soaked with cold milk and previously bathed in cinnamon, orange and lemon, then pass them through an egg and fry them with plenty of oil so that the toast is crispy on the outside. .
